A Century of Values Tour
“If you are going to celebrate a 100th anniversary, do it in a big way” That’s the message that 5 volunteers from the Detroit Area Council are delivering to the more than 300 local Boy Scout Councils across the nation. We were privileged to welcome them to the Scout Service Center today to officially kick-off our year of celebration! At the conclusion of their visit, we were presented with a beautiful framed mural that depicts the history of Scouting. The media also supported the event and you might see us on News10 and WKTV and read about us in the OD! If you find information in another newspaper, please send us a copy.

To remember this event, we will have patches and mural prints for sale in the Scout Shop and at our camp trading posts.

Charter Organization Training & Council Annual Meeting
Last night, June 18, our council held two great meetings at Mohawk Valley Community College. At 5:30pm, Mark Miller and Dave Manore presented a training program for our charter organization representatives. I am happy to report that we had 11 individuals attend and I’m sure they left with a better understanding of their roles. Look for us to continue to offer this important training in the future and please encourage your charter organization representative to attend.

After the training session, we held our Annual Meeting with nearly 50 people in the audience. We had the pleasure of welcoming Cub Scout Michael Jones and Boy Scout Greg Torres to led us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the Scout Oath and Law. We then listened intently as Eagle Scout Sam Getman from Crew 25 told us about his Scouting experience and his goals for his future. It was a great way to start our meeting!

We also held our annual leadership elections and welcomed 9 new members to our Executive Board. We heard reports about our financial performance, programs, and membership. The meeting ended with each person making a commitment to support our strategic plan, our districts, and most importantly our units.

Trailblazer Adventure Program
A few weeks ago, I mentioned that we are partnering with the US Sportsman’s Alliance to bring a Trailblazer Adventure Program to our Council. It’s now official. We will hold the event on June 12, 2010 at Camp Russell. Please save this date in your calendars…..you won’t want to miss it!

New Partnerships
Forming partnerships with new organizations is a must if we want to continue our long heritage of service and youth development. We are currently working on several new partnerships. In Rome, Greg Rindenello is working with the Chamber of Commerce to expand our Exploring Program and in Utica, we are expanding our partnership with Excellus Blue Cross to including Exploring. Today, we forged a new partnership! I am pleased to report that Tom Labayewski met with representatives from the Oneida Nation’s youth groups for a tour of Camps Kingsley and Russell. The group will be starting a Boy Scout Troop with 12 Scouts and is looking forward to eventually organizing a Cub Scout Pack and Venture Crew!

Father’s Day
Since my Dad and I live over 11 hours apart, we will not be able to be together this Father’s Day. However, that will not stop me from doing three very important things. During my weekly phone call, I will thank my Dad again for continuing to be a great example to me. I’m not sure if he will ever understand how much he means to me. The second, I will recommit myself to being a good example and a good father. The third is something that I do everyday – I will give my beautiful 3 year old daughter a hug and a kiss and tell her how much I love her!   This Father’s Day Sunday, I hope that we can all pause to reflect on the things that are important to us and make a promise to ourselves to celebrate them every day!
